Day 1 – Lisbon & Belém | Gateway to the Atlantic
Discover the capital as the command centre of Portugal’s maritime expansion. In Belém, explore how royal power, scientific knowledge and international trade came together to launch voyages into the unknown. Visit the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries while learning how navigators used nautical charts, astronomy and closely guarded information to cross the oceans. Day 2 – Lagos & Sagres | Europe’s Last Shore
Travel to the Algarve, one of the most important maritime regions of the Portuguese expansion. Explore Lagos, once a centre for shipbuilding, trade and expeditions along the African coast. Continue to Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, where the vast Atlantic dominates the landscape. Discover the navigation knowledge, winds and ocean currents that helped Portuguese sailors move beyond the limits of the known world. The experience also presents the difficult human consequences of expansion, including Lagos’s connection to the early Atlantic slave trade. Day 3 – Elvas | The Fortress That Protected a Kingdom
The final day moves from control of the oceans to control of the land. Explore Elvas, a UNESCO World Heritage city positioned beside the Spanish border and protected by one of the world’s largest systems of defensive fortifications. Walk along the walls, bastions and military gateways while discovering how geography, engineering and intelligence protected Portugal’s independence. Visit the remarkable Amoreira Aqueduct and one of the city’s star-shaped forts. Signature experience: Private exploration of the fortifications with an introduction to military maps, border surveillance and defensive strategy.
